SKILLS pay the BILLS đź’¸

Why increasing your skillset is more likely to increase your income

A recent book I read stated, “Most people would change employers every 20 months”… Why would anyone switch jobs this often?

Well, for several reasons: poor training and management, lack of support or growth opportunities, and probably the biggest reason… a desire for a pay increase. And honestly, most of these reasons are valid and make a lot of sense. BUT, then an interview I viewed asked… “Why would I increase someone’s pay when they aren’t providing additional value?” And, this question also makes a lot of sense. As employees, we expect annual raises but are we increasing our skill set? Or are we expecting the raise because of loyalty?

Regardless, there are many reasons we may change employers throughout our lifetime. The reality is, that to TRULY make a significant difference in our lives is to obtain new SKILLS. Without adding to our skill set, we cannot expect a dramatic change in our income stream or life. If we’re exchanging our time for dollars, there is a cap. Even with the highest-paying careers, there is only so much time we can give to our jobs each day without reaching burnout or destroying our personal lives (like failing to make time for family). And don’t even get me started on the taxes paid on earned income… (that’s for another day).

So now I’m sure you’re thinking… Okay, Ariana, what kind of skills are you even referring to?

If you’ve read Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki or Unlock Your Potential by Jeff Lerner, you know that SALES is probably one of the best skills to obtain. This will help you in so many more areas of your life aside from just learning how to sell things. You should constantly be looking to improve your communication (sales does this), learn how to handle objections (sales does this too), and simply get out of your comfort zone! Plus, sales have created more millionaires and business owners than any other career choice.

The most important thing though, is learning skills that are relevant today. Sure, we can take the time out to learn new things like churning our butter, but is that scalable today? It might be, but it may take a lot more time than say, learning how to market or create digital content.

Some skills I’ve attained: Obtained my life and health insurance license and have already tripled my income in just under 7 months, consistent sales training and objection handling, personal development courses, and I’ve recently enrolled in an Entrepreneurship educational platform (super excited for this!!!)

Take some time to think of skills you would enjoy learning… and then think if that skill can make you some money. Remember, skills pay the bills!

If you need some ideas, let me know in the comments! Let’s connect and brainstorm what might work for you and your needs.

P.S. Within the next week or so, I’m extremely excited to share a new segment. Every day, I’ll be sending out interviews I held with small business owners who were gracious enough to share their experiences thus far in creating their businesses.
