Interviewing a Business Owner - Part IV

Featuring Stacy McCall-Martin

In this newsletter segment, I am sharing a few interviews I had the privilege of having with business owners. Every business owner is in a different stage of their journey, allowing us to see what it takes to become an entrepreneur!

Next, we have, Stacy McCall-Martin from sunny Southern California! Stacy is a woman of God, a wife, a mother, and enjoying life to the fullest without being too busy. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Cal State Long Beach and her Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Stacy runs a faith-based virtual business - The Fruited Life. Her business was birthed during the pandemic and as a licensed therapist, she aims to support clients where they are in life providing both individual and couples therapy.

As always, I asked Stacy to share some wins as a business owner and she shared she is grateful to be earning a liveable wage while prioritizing her mental well-being. A few things stuck out to me as Stacy shared her experience which I think every business owner should seriously reflect upon: Mental wealth CAN translate into financial wealth. Success in her business may not be evident in the algorithm, but ultimately, she knows she is providing quality service! She also said, “Something that may make money faster, may rob me of the journey!!!” this stuck with me. We’re constantly looking for ways to speed things up and become more efficient, but are we truly experiencing the journey?

When I asked how being a business owner has helped Stacy grow personally, she shared that she’s been stretched in ways she never thought she would be stretched before. Being neurodivergent, Stacy shared she can get distracted easily, especially if she is doing too many things. As God guided her to pursue her private practice, she became more intentional with what she did and ensured she cared for her mind, body, and spirit.

Speaking with Stacy shifted my perspective of things. As someone with a large family, with many small kids, building a business can become extremely overwhelming, especially living in California. Focusing on increasing income while sacrificing my self-care seemed normal… Adding being a mom of 5 under age 7, and creating time for myself seemed like a struggle in and of itself. Hearing Stacy intentionally make time for herself has inspired me to do the same!

I’m extremely grateful to have the opportunity to interview Stacy! To end the interview, I asked what advice she would give an aspiring entrepreneur and she shared, to pursue your business at your own pace, and avoid doing what everyone else is doing just because it’s trendy. When you’re passionate about what you are doing, you’ll meet the needs of so many more people.

Thank you so much to Stacy for meeting with me to share advice and experiences!
